Revisiting Web 2.0March 15th, 2008

This post has been contributed by O'Flaherty via CBN

Last year  (May 2007) as part of a meme that was going around I wrote a wrote a list of the core Web 2.0 sites that I use with a rough idea of how regularly I visit each of them.

Well 10 months have passed and much has changed on the internet landscape so I thought it would be good to revisit that list and update it.

Daily Use:

  • Twitter - For making announcements and getting great blogging ideas and staying in contact with friends and loved ones.
  • Google / Google Blog Search  - Research!
  • Google Bookmarks - For personal bookmarks.
  • Google Reader - My main tool for consuming RSS feeds.
  • FeedBurner - Check feed usage statistics, also handles emails  for subscribers.
  • WordPress - My blog platform of choice.
  • Wikipedia - Research (even though I hate their "nofollow" policy)
  • GMail - Web based email client, file storage and chat text storage.
  • StumbleUpon - Finding new sites, or simply wasting time. Up from Weekly.
  • Facebook - See MySpace. Up from Weekly.
  • Google Analytics - Great for checking up on where my and others is coming from.
  • BlogTV - Am on BlogTV broadcasting almost everyday. You can see all the shows on O’Flaherty Live. *NEW*
  • Bloomer - Denmarks best social network (and I’m a co-founder). *NEW*
  • Pingoat - No better way to get the word out after you’ve updated your blog. *NEW*
  • Fuelmyblog - My favorite blogging community and I co-host Fuelmyblog TV. *NEW*
  • HelloTxt - Allows me to post links to Twitter, Facebook, Pownce and others in one go. Love it. *NEW*
  • FriendFeed - Great way to track what my friends are up to across multiple services. *NEW*

Weekly Use:

  • Google Adsense - Did I make ANY money this week? Finally making dosh with this.
  • YouTube - User generated video content (Slightly more than weekly usage to be honest but not daily).
  • Digg - For seeing what’s hot in the world of Tech. But I am loosing interest due to the crowd mentality. Down from daily.
  • Del.icio.us - For public bookmarks. Down from daily.
  • MyBlogLog - Check blog stats and interact with the O’Flaherty community! Down from daily.
  • UStream - Used to stream live when I’m not interested in to much interaction. *NEW*
  • Blogcatalog - Like MyBlogLog *NEW*
  • Pownce - Like Twitter but a lot of cross posting between the two. *NEW*
  • Last-fm . The plugin runs every time I play music but I only visit the sight about once a week. Gives good insight into what types of music your friends are into. *NEW*

Monthly Use:

  • PodShow - To host my podcast. Down from weekly
  • Podsafe music network - To find great music. Down from weekly.
  • SplashCast - Great flash player, used for playing my podcast. Down from weekly.
  • MySpace - Keeping in touch with some folks an promoting my podcast Down from weekly.
  • CoComment - to keep track of my comments on the web. Down from Daily.

Removed from list:

  • Technorati - Monitor blog popularity and see who’s linking to O’Flaherty.  Never visit it any more. Google Blog Search and Google Alerts combined does a better job.
  • Bebo  - Keeping in touch with folks. Nobody I know uses it.
  • Snapsoid -  Online photo sharing. Er… yeah forget it.
  • Flickr - photo sharing Lost all interest in this. Prefer to host pictures from my own server.
  • Jaiku - Used almost as a stream of “me”. Never visit this or about 50 services like it any more. They now all are set up to aggregate my content from the sources that I do use.
  • BlogRovr - See who’s talking about the blog I’m reading. No interest. Can find the same information with Google Blog Search if I need it.

As I said in the original post I’m sure there are more than I have listed here. The list isn’t comprehensive but covers all the important ones.

What sites do you use and why?
