Password AlarmApril 23rd, 2009

Here at OnlineClock we’re always looking for ways to make our Online Alarm Service even better.

By this we don’t mean more complicated or more feature-rich. We mean simpler. Better. Easier to use. For everyone - not just for the readers of TechCrunch. We’re talking about your Moms and Dads here, folks. We love technology, but we’re not techno-snobs.

(We’ve already laid out our design philosophy in past posts.)

Back about a year ago we added two buttons to our ‘Off’ page at the suggestion of a loyal user.

Now we’re hear to tell you about a cool way to make it extra hard to fall back asleep too easily when our clock’s alarm goes off.

We discovered this in a “tweet” someone made about us on Twitter:

Password Alarm

First of all, Nick Bernstein - thank you!

We’re glad you find our alarm clock useful. We love hearing stuff like this.

Secondly, what a genius idea: using the password-protection function for Windows Screensavers to make it so that you’ll have to type in your password in order to turn off our godawfully ugly alarm sound.

Nick, you officially get an OnlineClock Gold Star for this idea:

The Official OnlineClock Gold Star of Excellence
The Official OnlineClock Gold Star of Excellence

If for some reason you don’t fully understand how this works, let me spell it out for you:

  1. Select your desired Alarm Time on our site
  2. Right-Click on an empty portion of your Windows Desktop and select Properties
  3. Choose the Screen Saver tab
  4. Place a check next to “On resume, password protect”
  5. If you haven’t already selected a screensaver from the pulldown menu, go ahead and do this (Duh!)

That’s it - you’re ready to clock and roll!

Of course, you can hear the alarm sound even when your screensaver is running. Test it first. It works.

In order to turn off the alarm, you’ll have to enter in your password.

It’s so simple, it’s genius…er, kind of like a particular website we know…(Ahem, sorry!).

The only drawback is that you can’t see our beautiful Digital Clock if your screensaver comes on…but, hey, maybe you’ll be sleeping anyway. If this is the case (and only if!), then we guess it’s OK.

And why, you ask, should you go to all the trouble of password-protecting your alarm?

Why, to combat the evil Snooze Demons, of course!

We hope you enjoy this brilliant new password-protected alarm function we’ve now added to all of our Online Alarm Clocks.

We know we’ve worked long and hard developing it for you. ;)

Nick Bernstein, enjoy that star, buddy. But don’t let us find it showing up in any pawn shop…
